The Island of Caprera

Located in the La Maddalena Archipelago, off the northeastern coast of Sardinia, the Island of Caprera is one of the island’s hidden gems. With its stunning beaches, picturesque coves, and unique flora and fauna, the island is a popular destination for nature lovers and those seeking a peaceful escape from urban life.

One of the most remarkable things about the island is its untouched nature. Caprera is part of the La Maddalena Archipelago National Park, and much of its territory is protected. This means that wildlife is still present in great numbers and the flora has remained intact, creating a natural spectacle of great beauty.

For those who love hiking, the island offers a wide selection of trails and scenic routes. One of the most famous paths is the one leading to Cala Coticcio, also known as “Tahiti.” This pristine beach is located in one of the island’s most beautiful coves, offering crystal-clear waters and fine white sand. The trail to reach the beach, which winds through a forest of holm oaks and mastic trees, is of moderate difficulty but is definitely worth it for the panoramic views along the way.

Another must-do excursion is the one to the Fortress of Caprera, where the Italian national hero, Giuseppe Garibaldi, spent the last years of his life. The Fortress is situated on a hilltop and offers a panoramic view of La Maddalena and the surrounding islands.

Caprera also offers numerous opportunities for water activities. There are several beaches perfect for families, such as Cala Andreani, where the waters are shallow and the seabed is sandy. For snorkeling enthusiasts, Cala Coticcio offers a unique experience for exploring the marine life.

A visit to the Garibaldi Naval Museum is also not to be missed. The museum is located inside the house where Garibaldi spent his final years and tells the story of his maritime exploits. Inside the museum, you can admire the remains of his famous boat, the “Anita,” which was used during the Expedition of the Thousand.

The Island of Caprera is an unmissable destination for anyone wanting to discover the natural beauty of Sardinia. With its pristine beaches, scenic hikes, and history, the island offers a wide variety of activities for all ages and tastes.
