Sailing in the La Maddalena Archipelago

The La Maddalena Archipelago is a protected area of Sardinia, located north-east of the island. This archipelago consists of seven main islands: La Maddalena, Caprera, SantoStefano, Spargi, Budelli, Razzoli, and Santa Maria, along with numerous smaller islands, islets, and rocks. The history of the La Maddalena Archipelago National Park is linked to the history of Sardinia and Italy and dates back many centuries.

The earliest traces of human presence in the La Maddalena Archipelago date back to the prehistoric age, as evidenced by the numerous archaeological sites on the island of Caprera. Later, the archipelago was inhabited by the Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans, and Byzantines. In the Middle Ages, the island of La Maddalena was used as a landing point for travelers crossing the Tyrrhenian Sea. During the Renaissance, the archipelago was exploited for growing mulberry trees, used for silk production, and for fishing.

In the 18th century, the La Maddalena Archipelago became an important military stronghold, used by the Savoy to protect the Sardinian coasts. During the Second World War, the archipelago was used as a naval base by the Italian Navy. After the war, the archipelago was returned to the civilian population while still maintaining many military installations, the arsenal—recently decommissioned—the petty officers’ schools, and many other buildings. Traditionally, during the summer, the President of the Republic spends a short holiday period in a protected residence belonging to the Island’s naval command.

After the Unification of Italy, the island of Caprera became the residence of Giuseppe Garibaldi, the famous Hero of the Two Worlds. Garibaldi spent the last years of his life on the island, and today it is possible to visit his house-museum and the memorial.

In 1994, the La Maddalena Archipelago was declared a National Park with the aim of protecting the natural environment and the biodiversity of the archipelago. The La Maddalena Archipelago National Park covers an area of 12,000 hectares, of which 8,000 hectares are sea. The protected area is characterized by an extraordinary variety of landscapes, including beaches, coves, cliffs, sand dunes, lagoons, and Mediterranean scrub forests.

The fauna of the La Maddalena Archipelago is very diverse and includes numerous species of birds, such as the Corsican gull, the peregrine falcon, and the European shag. Among the mammals present in the protected area, dolphins can be observed, and the Mediterranean monk seal was also once present. Furthermore, in the waters of the archipelago, it is possible to admire numerous species of fish, such as swordfish, tuna, dentex, and grouper.
